The Prayer Shawl Chronicles

The Prayer Shawl Chronicles: Stories of Unlikely Connections & Unexpected Gifts, by Cynthia Coe, is a collection of feel-good short stories that will make you laugh, cry, and think.

Knit with love, prayer shawls show someone you care about them, think about them, and hold them in prayer.

At least two great stories are bound together by every prayer shawl – the story of the crafter, and the story of the recipient. Though these two people are connected by one prayer shawl, they may have vastly different stories. The knitting craftsperson who spends hours making a prayer shawl and the man or woman who receives it may never meet or have anything in common. They may never cross each other’s paths. Yet their stories are linked together by prayer and a piece of knitting.

Each story in The Prayer Shawl Chronicles is a fictional tale of someone who finds herself in need of healing – and how that quest for healing ultimately helps someone else heal as well. Unexpected gifts appear, seemingly out of nowhere. Unlikely connections are made, sometimes across cultures and even continents, sometimes between people who might never imagine themselves connected in any way – just like the work of the Holy Spirit itself.

If you’ve read the original Prayer Shawl Chronicles, you’ll want to read the sequel, The Knitting Guild of All Saints. Follow favorite characters as they find themselves in new and unlikely places and situations. New characters appear as well, as romance blooms and as the prayer shawl ministry of All Saints Church goes out into the world. Available in paperback, e-book, and included in Kindle Unlimited at this link.

The third book in the series is Knitting Through Time: Stories of How We Learned to Knit. Some familiar faces from the previous book continue their journeys in this book, but the main storyline seeks to answer the question, “how did we as a civilization learn to knit?”

No one knows the answer to this question, so my imagination got to come up with some wonderful stories of how knitting might have gotten started in Egypt, then spread to Spain, then to the rest of Europe and on to the Americas. As a history major, I had a ball with this book. I hope you’ll enjoy it, too!

If you’re into prayer shawls…or want to learn something about them, I also offer A Prayer Shawl Handbook: Inspiration and Resources for Your Prayer Shawl Ministry. This book contains the history of prayer shawls, patterns, uses of prayer shawls, prayers, and even a Blessing of the Prayer Shawls liturgy. If you’ve read the Prayer Shawl Chronicles books, you’ll want to grab your knitting needles and make one for yourself!
